One of the main reason why you landed in this post is that you’re wondering what is Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is all about. The answer is simple, it’s a new game by the League of Legends developer, Riot Games, inspired by the auto-chess game genre.
What is Auto-Chess Game Genre?
If you’re living under the rock and also don’t have any idea what auto-chess genre mean, it’s a mode of a game where players place a hero or characters with different abilities. These characters will automatically fight after the planning phase and the player who has the last man standing left on the battlefield is the winner of the match.
The auto-chess idea originally came from a mod in DOTA 2. This mod got the attention of the developer where they decide to make a separate game for it called Dota Underlords which is now available on PC via Steam, Mac OS, and mobile devices.
What is Teamfight Tactics and How to Play It?
As mentioned above, Teamfight Tactics has the same idea with the Dota Underlords. In Teamfight Tactics, there’s a total of 8 players in every match, although the battle will be available between 2 players at a time.
There are different phases in each match – the Shared Draft Phase, Planning Phase, and Combat Phase.
Shared Draft Phase
During this phase, all players will be circling around the arena. In the middle of the arena, players will see the heroes called Champions. Once all players are loaded, there will be a signal which marks players to move and touch any Champions that they want. This is a first come first serve policy, so whoever touches the Champion first, will be the owner of the Champion.
Right after players got their Champion, they will be moved to a squared arena where they fight minions. This is pretty easy and I think even a grade 1 schooler can pass this without even doing anything.
This is where things get a bit complicated. During the Planning Phase, players need to purchase Champions. Selecting Champions is easy but choosing the right one for the future battles is required. Once players already selected their Champions, they will now be placing them to the squared arena.
You can buy as many Champions as you want, but keep in mind that the numbers of Champions that you can get depend on your current level. That being said, if you’re only Level 3, you can only have a total of 3 Champions. If you’re Level 4, you can have 4 Champions, and so on. It’s easy to level up during the early game but you’ll find yourself getting a low experience as you progress. When this happens, you’ll need to spend some gold and purchase XP.
Proper Champion placing is the key to the victory. In this case, we highly recommend placing tough and high HP Champions in the front row, followed by ranged damage Champions at the back. Also, make sure that you have a backup plan in case things messed up.
This is where the real action begins. During the Combat Phase, you and your opponent need to do nothing but to watch the Champions fight in the arena. One side should completely defeat all of his opponents Champion and the player who has the last Champion standing will be declared as the winner.
Once a winner has been declared during the 1-on-1 battle, both player will jump into a portal bringing them back to the Shared Draft Phase again. This process will continue again and again until one ultimate player with the most win is declared as a winner.
Setting Up Your Strategy
Similar to a normal chess game, Auto-Chess also need a strategy and advance planning to win the match and claim the title. In order to do that, you have to maximize the resources that are available in the game.
Maximizing Items and Equipment
In Teamfight Tactics, there are also called items that can be used in the game. These items are basic resources that will help you upgrade and enhance your Champion’s survival on the battlefield.
Similar to the League of Legends, combining items that are compatible with the Champions will greatly enhance their attack and defense. If you’re looking for an in-depth item guide, then check this link.
All Champions in Teamfight Tactics start at 1-star and during the progress of the game, you have the option to level up the Champions. To upgrade the Champion of your choice, all you need to do is buy the same 1-star Champion and when you gathered three the same 1-star Champion, the 1-Star Champion that you have will be upgrade to a 2-star Champion. Keep in mind that the higher the star rating, the higher the chance to survive and win the game.
