Top 10 Most Badass Female Video Game Characters Of All Time

Since then, male characters are usually getting the main highlight of many video games. However, we should also not miss the strong and badass female game characters that have been making their name in the gaming industry.

In the gaming world there have been some strong and promising female characters that have been rippling some muscles to be noticed. So we made our list of the most badass female video game characters of all time.

Top 10 Most Badass Female Game Characters

10. Lara Croft

Lead hero of the long-running Tomb Raider series, Lara Croft has been kicking butt since 1996. While she’s gotten a few changes to her backstory and appearance over the years, she never fails to bring the fire.

Lara is considered to be, by many, one of the most iconic video game characters ever. It is also perhaps the earliest example of a sex symbol in the gaming industry, although her most recent games have attempted to actually stray away from that.

9. Samus Aran

The surprise girl reveal, at the of the original Metroid, will always remain one of the most shocking twists in gaming history, but since that reveal, Nintendo has expanded upon Samus’ abilities and solidified her place as one of the biggest badasses ever.

Samus is a galactic bounty hunter who uses her powerful exoskeleton to take down her enemies and to do battle with Ridley, the leader of the Space Pirates, that often butts heads with the Galactic Federation. Samus has also appeared in every Smash Bros. Game to date and never fails to pack a punch over there either.

8. Chun-Li

Chun-Li is one of the main faces of the Street Fighter series. She first appeared in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. It was the very first playable female character in the franchise. She is a martial arts expert, and Interpol officer, who attempts to chase down the evil M. Bison, who killed her father.

Many consider Chun-Li to be one of the main trailblazers for female characters in video games, as her backstory, her appearance, and her power were all extremely innovative at the time of Street Fighter II’s initial release.

7. Anya Stroud

Anya appears throughout the first two Gears of War games, although you rarely ever see her in person, as she mainly just communicates with you over your comms, but in Gears of War 3, Epic Games decided to bring her out of the office and onto the front lines, and Anya is now considered to be one of the most intimidating female video game characters of all time.

She has no fear at all, as she rips through the limbs of Locust. She doesn’t care, and her confidence in battle is part of why so many people love her and attach to her.

6. Jill Valentine

First appearing in the original Resident Evil game, all the way back in 1996, we have Jill Valentine at number six. She was one of the playable characters in that game and continued to be a main part of the franchise moving forward. Many consider Jill to be one of the most attractive female protagonists in video game history, and her appearance has been praised by being professional and competent, as opposed to skimpy and revealing.

While some think that she isn’t a very strong character, we wholeheartedly disagree. I mean come on, did you see all the stuff she had to do in Resident Evil one and three?

5. Cortana

Cortana first appeared in Halo: Combat Evolved, and has played a pivotal part in every single Halo game to date. While her later appearances have been criticized for being out of character, everything up until Halo 5, in my opinion, is great.

Cortana is Master Chief’s companion, throughout his missions, giving you help, advice, and friendly conversation as you deal with the evil Covenant, the Brutes, the Flood, the Prometheans, whatever it may be at that moment. Let’s just hope that Halo 6 redeems Cortana a little bit, because many Halo fans weren’t happy with the way she was actually handled, and portrayed, in Halo 5.

4. Bayonetta

This hack and slash hero has gotten a lot of attention recently, due to her popularity in the most recent Smash Bros. Games, as well as the recent announcement of Bayonetta 3 for the Nintendo Switch.

Now, Bayonetta was designed to be as sexy and fashionable as possible, with her fighting style inspired by that of Devil May Cry, and she also has plenty of magic at her disposal, and she can use her hair as a weapon to destroy her enemies, which that’s pretty awesome.

3. Rayne

Rayne may not exactly be a heroine, but she’s still a complete badass and worthy of a spot on this list. She is the main character of the BloodRayne series, which is a series we hope comes back very, very soon, and is a Dhampir, a cross between a human and a vampire, who has no issue at all with slicing through and feasting on those who get in the way of her objectives.

She sets out to find her father, won’t let anything stop her, regardless of how powerful or supernatural it may be. If you ever wanted an awesome Buffy the Vampire Slayer game, BloodRayne is probably the closest thing you’ll get to it.

2. Faith

Faith is the main character of the first-person action game, Mirror’s Edge, and Faith was heavily inspired by Lola in the classic German movie Run Lola Run. She is a runner, a messenger in a strange dystopian world, where the government is always watching and trying to keep people in line.

Faith is fearless, she’s athletic, she gets from place to place as quickly and nimbly as possible, all while avoiding enemy forces or surveillance. Not only is Faith a badass, but this game is criminally underrated, as a masterpiece, in my opinion. If you’ve never played Mirror’s Edge, you absolutely should.

1. Zelda

Finishing off our list is none other than Zelda, the iconic Princess Zelda. Don’t be fooled by her damsel in distress appearance, as Zelda will absolutely mess you up if you give her the chance. She first appeared in the original Zelda game, in 1986, and looks over Hyrule with her magic abilities, proving that she isn’t all helpless without Link.

She even transforms into the ninja Sheik, and the pirate Tetra, in later games to show that she can handle herself just fine.

There you have it folks. I hope you enjoyed reading our top 10 most badass female video game character of all time.
