How to Keep Mechanoids Waster-Free in RimWorld

Here you will learn the basics about pollution that you need to know when playing with a mechanic in a settlement.

Waste bags are a harmful resource in the game, and getting rid of them is a challenge. They appear when fixing or charging mechanoids. If you don’t get rid of the waste, but just leave it to rot, then the 6 nearest cells where the waste bags were lying – will be suitable for only a few plants, and being on these cells causes toxin poisoning, as in toxic fallout.

Let me make it clear, combat mechanoids, even if there are a thousand of them, will not cause pollution problems, because they can be kept in off mode when there is no threat. From this they will slowly recharge themselves without producing waste.

If anyone needs to know anything about waste, it’s those who use mechanoid workers.

Waste disposal methods

One bag of waste contaminates 6 cells when it leaks into the soil.

There are four ways to dispose of waste:

  • Storage of waste in a frozen state;
  • Transportation outside the settlement;
  • Use of a purification tree;
  • Use of a toxin splitter.

Freezing

This method will require a lot of space to store the bags frozen, as well as providing electricity for air conditioning.
Even with the use of shelving, one cage can only hold 15 bags of waste. If, however, a malfunctioning air conditioner causes the waste to contaminate the environment, it can always be cleaned up by re-bagging it.

Transporting waste outside the settlement

One bag dumped somewhere on the world map adds 0.05% to a cell’s pollution, so to completely render a cell unusable for waste storage, you would need to dump 2000 bags of waste on it.
The main difficulty of the method is that you have to get rid of the waste by manual transportation, because through transportation capsules will need to spend each time 60 steel and 1 component for its construction, as well as fuel. One capsule can hold 25 bags of waste.
The optimal place to dump the waste should be at least one-fifth cell away from the settlement and at least twenty cells away from the nearest neutral settlement, so as not to spoil relations.

Tree of Purification

This method requires waiting for the Purification Tree to appear on the map itself or for an exceptionally orbiting exotic merchant to sell the seed of the tree. The maximum price of the seed is 2016 silver.
The tree itself can appear after the map has been contaminated with waste from ~5188 bags. The last two trees (there can be three in total on the map) will require contamination from ~7802 bags to appear.
On initially polluted locations, all three trees will be there from the start.
This tree destroys waste that has leached into the soil near its roots. One such tree destroys all the waste from one bag in 60 hours.

Toxin Breaker

This is a machine available after research and requires 400 electricity to operate. A bag of waste is placed in it and after 12 hours the bag is completely destroyed.

Keeping mechanoids free of waste

Mechanoids produce toxins when they charge from recharge stations or when they are repaired by a mechanoid.
Those mechanoids charging from a small recharge station produce 5 bags of waste for every 100% charge replenished. Those mechanoids charging at the large recharge station produce 10 scrap bags for every 50% of their charge replenished.

Question, how many mechanoids can be maintained if all waste is destroyed by a purification tree or toxin splitter?

Working mechanoids use 10% of their charge per day when they are working, and only 3% per day when they are not working. Combat mechanoids, on the other hand, use 10% of their charge whenever they are on.
Based on this, you can calculate how many mechanoids can be kept in working condition without producing unnecessary waste by destroying them in a toxin splitter or purification tree.

The mechanoids of the small recharging station

  • 1 toxin splitter completely destroys the waste of 4 mechanoids
  • 2 purification trees completely destroy the waste of 1 mechanoid

Mechanoids of a large recharging station

  • 1 toxin splitter completely destroys the waste of 1 mechanoid
  • 5 ancient purification will completely destroy the waste of 1 mechanoid
