How to unlock some of the basic NPCs.

How to unlock new NPCs

NPCs are unlocked at lost soul rooms. The room icon is below.

This list is very incomplete so please comment if you know where NPCs are found.
Fortuna: Fungated Funnels
Collector: Hollow Hives
Librarian: Arid Athenium
Priestess: Somber Sepulcher
Fisherman: Calm Caldarium
Fool: Ticking Tower Top

NPCs in the Metro – Unlocking + Uses

The following NPCs are located in the metro station:

Caretaker: unlocked by default
Gives help, lore, and rewards you for completing/discovering secrets

The Imprisoned One: unlocked by default
Exchanges soul tokens for relics. You can as many relics as you want at a time, but you can only bring two in with you (the latest two you bought).

Tinkerer: unlocked by default
Exchanges materials for mechanic upgrades + furniture for the station. After a certain amount of furniture upgrades shades will start giving you rewards after runs.

Librarian: unlocked in the Arid Athenium
Upon completing challenges rewards the player with soul coins and materials. Unlocks an encyclopedia of all unlocked relics and monsters.

Fisherman: unlocked in the Calm Caldarium
Allows the player to fish. Bait can be found in the Clock tower in order to fish, and then sell the fish back to make soul coins.

The Fool: unlocked
Allows the player to listen to all the music tracks they’ve unlocked so far.

The Apprentices: unlocked by default
In the metro they can be found in the basement and will exchange soul coins for materials.
In the Clocktower they can be found in the train after beating any boss and will recycle relics into upgrade hammers, allowing you to upgrade relics without spending hearts.
Common relics are worth 1 hammer, rare relics are worth 2 hammers and legendary relics are worth 3 hammers. Upgrade level does not impact the amount of hammers you get from recycling.

NPCs in the Clock tower (Unlocking + Uses)

The following NPCs can be found in the Clock tower:

Merchant: unlocked by default
Found on every floor except Hollow Hives, Calm Caldarium and the Lost Refuge.
Exchanges hearts for pickups or relics. Has a chance to provide discounts and can sold more items when the upgrade is unlocked by the Tinkerer. Has no cost to enter if in the first area.

Quest NPC
Exchanges materials, soul coins and memento’s (dropped from bosses after a perfect fight where no damage was taken) for shortcuts to areas. Shortcuts can’t be used on highest shard level.

The Metro Smith
Found in the train right after the floors boss.
Exchanges maximum hearts (taken from the right side of the health bar) or hammers for upgrades to relics. Relics can be upgraded twice, with basic relics costing 0.5 / 1 hearts (1 / 2 hammers), rare relics costing 1/1.5 hearts (2/3 hammers) and legendary relics costing 1.5/2 hearts (3/4 hammers).

Potentially found on every floor.
Exchanges one heart for a gamble with three chests. One chest has a relic, one chest has two pickups, and the other is empty.

Collector: Hollow Hives
Exchanges multiple weaker relics for one stronger relic. The player is allowed to choose out of two options which relics to sacrifice.

Priestess: Somber Seplucher
Exchanges hearts to remove curses. The curse can be chosen out of two of your random curses.

The Chef: The Athenaeum
Provides food that can give you either a soul bar, two shields, or can heal 50% or 100% of your max health.

The Keydiot:
Exchanges keys for relics. If you have no keys when entering his room you can dash into him to get 1 key drop.

The Giant: upgrade from tinkerer
Exchanges a heart for the choice of one of two relics.

Cartographer:
Allows the player to expand the next area with an additional special room and extra floors.
