The Gray Man Act 1 Walkthrough

This guide will present the player with a bullet point flow and what he needs to do to finish the first chapter of the game. So the first new game starts now!

The Beginning

You are in an endless subconscious abyss from which there is no escape. The character of Anthony goes through a spectrum of thoughts and ideas that the player witnesses. The monologue is skippable. He imagines a chaotic flashbacks to his fragmented past, as well as a fictional serial killer session. Through the Abyss, various fragments of memories return to him with increasing intensity until the murder of a stranger in his apartment. Further, even into almost convincing thoughts of suicide, where the player can easily interact with his hand to prevent him from doing so. Once the Source of Destruction has completely filled up, Anthony remembers the worst monster that haunts him. Wall of Shame is a minor example of thoughts that Anthony is currently ashamed of, and most players holding down the button will also write this text later in the game. Here comes the first chapter.

I Just Want to Talk

We’re moving into the present. Anthony in the Subconscious imagines a situation in which he keeps an unknown woman in his basement. After a brief dialogue, Anthony decides to refill her water in a bowl. The player picks up the empty bowl and refills it from the tap either in the bathroom or in the kitchen by clicking and holding the right mouse button in the inventory (the “B” button on the gamepad) on the object so that it touches the water. This fills the bowl and allows Anthony to bring it back to the victim in the basement.

In the meantime, players can encounter for the first time (if they missed the Gameplay Showcase when turning on the game or in the menu) the main game area, the house and (later) the garden around the house. The player points the cursor where they want to go and both the cursor icon and the bottom location text change. Clicking will cause the player to walk, approach an object or perform an action.
So the player fills the bowl and goes back to the basement and passes the water. nthony ponders over the bread if he should pass it to the woman too, after all maybe the lady is hungry. In a slight inattention, the woman hits him with the bowl and makes a run for it, while Anthony, unconscious, recalls vague fragments of memories.

An Attempt to Escape

Anthony wakes up and decides to find the woman immediately. Fortunately, all exits are blocked. The player notices various sounds coming from above ground. So he heads up the stairs, not forgetting to put to inventory the axe on the ground. After searching, he finds a woman in a corner of the study, which is still part of the corridor. The woman runs away.

Later the woman tries to hide in the storage area (next to the children’s room), which is covered with various bags of garbage. Anthony enters here, follows his murderous lust, and finds the woman cowering. She goes on the run again, not having a chance against a stronger personality. She’s already weakened.

The woman tries to break through the main door on the ground floor, but is unsuccessful. Anthony finds her and properly enjoys this feeling of power. However, he then locks the woman back in the basement and adds a freshly filled water bottle. The Source fills up. He goes off into his various thoughts. He wakes up the next day to the sound of screams that make him walk towards the basement. But… after all, he stays to listen longer. Breakfast is served!

Driving, A Park, Listening…

Anthony drives his car to one of his favourite places, a nearby park. He finds his bench and looks around for certain people. It’s daytime, however, which makes the excitement all the greater. However, he spots a lady and wants to go up to her. The player clicks the mouse to follow her, although he has some alternate routes along the way. However, he reaches the town and loses her.

The empty city offers few recreational opportunities! Search for and find various instruments of death that are variously placed on the ground or at the end of paths that unlock the player a small introduction with the Whisperer.

The city is also an opportunity to eavesdrop on its residents. Three options are offered, where you only need to complete two eavesdrops of the surrounding area to fill the Source. A couple on the bench? Listening under the window? Or listening outside the door in the residential unit? The player will encounter the first of many Walls of Shame, but can also write in it. After eavesdropping, Anthony’s lust awakens, and he prefers to escape the city back to his car. And the rain begins.

A Way Home

Driving around the neighborhood, he finds a woman passing by and so stops her. A small monologue takes place, at which the player accepts the woman into his vehicle. Anthony doesn’t care where she is going, but in the form of brief conversations, he is seized by an overwhelming lust for power. Unfortunately, however, he loses control so badly that he stops the car in the middle of the road and the woman, fearing for herself, prefers to run away.

However, there comes an internal outburst that intensifies Anthony’s all-too-crazy hunger, which is unsustainable. He comes back home.

At this critical moment, he arrives home… and slowly finds the axe. The player is partially granted access to one of the first endings of the game, and that is if he forces his way into the workroom…

Consumed by Lust

Anthony feels some sympathy for the woman in the basement… or something, why he hasn’t hurt her much earlier. But now the lust is so strong that nothing can be stopped. The player becomes merely a spectator, watching the main character’s decay.

After killing a woman in his basement with an axe, Anthony shows signs of calming down… but there’s something wrong… his waking state clashes with his subconscious. The house is already covered in blood and darkness is closing in.

Mysterious Eyes emerge from the darkness. An Inner Voice. A Whisperer that takes full control of Anthony. Suppressing his conscience and controlling his body as he pleases in his twisted philosophy. Comes a tiny effort to understand his mindset and the utter insane absorption from which there is no escape and never will be.

In the end however the real voice of Anthony emerges for a moment from the depths of the soul… and speaks softly…
