Complete Venba Recipe Guide

For those, like me, who don’t like to follow a video and prefer to have a step by step written down. I usually like to also add clues and will do so when an achievement can be unlocked during a recipe, this part will be spoiled.

The description of the meal comes from the flavor text available in game, I don’t pretend to know the recipe myself nor the culture going with, however I took the decision to add those information as people may have missed the flavor text and may enjoy reading more about the food.

The Recipes

Idlis

Flavor Text: Idlis is a made with grinded rice and fermented lentils, the batter is then steamed until becoming fluffy soft cakes. Those are ideal for breakfast and can be eaten with various filling. Venba’s favorite way to eat idlis with leftover chicken gravy.

Idlis Recipe

  • Put the water in the cooker.
  • Place the towel on the idli plate.
  • Put some idli batter on the plate.
  • Place the plate inside the cooker.
  • Rotate the plate as shown on the recipe book, the goal is to have the batter over the previous plate’s holes for the steam to easily cook the batter on each plate equally. If you fail to do so, only the bottom plate will be cooked.
  • Rince and repeat for the three plates then put the lid on the cooker.

Puttu

Flavor Text: Like for the previous recipe, rice flour is used. The flavor text explains that when you have to store the flour, it has to be toasted, however you can skip that step if you intent to use the flour right away.

In the game, the puttu you prepare is with rice flour and coconut flour but you can use anything in between the layers of rice flour. Paavalan’s favorite is called Eraichi Puttu and has minced meat layered with the rice flour.

Rice Flour Recipe

  • Grind the rice in the blender.
  • Using a sieve, separate the fine rice from the chunks.
  • Put the chunks in the blender and separate the flour from the chunks once more.
  • Rince and repeat until there is no chunk left.
  • Fold the towel and put it in the water to make the batter.

Puttu Recipe

  • Set the puttu kettle on the stove and add water.
  • Add the mold on top of the kettle.
  • Fill the kettle with 1 layer of coconut flour , 2 layers of rice flour, 1 layer of coconut flour, 2 layers of rice flour and a last layer of coconut flour. You do not have to count the spoons, the right amount is taken when you pick the spoon.
  • Place the lid and wait for the rocket to launch.

Special Achievement: Fail to launch the rocket by layering the kettle wrong.

Layered Biriyani

Flavor Text: In Toronto, the Eelam Tamil community managed to organize itself to buy and sell spices and ingredients specific to the Tamil dishes so the price would be affordable for the imigrants.

20 years after Venba and Pavaalam moved to Toronto, it became easy to learn how to cook Tamil dishes thanks to Tamil restaurants, theaters and shops offering this opportunity.

There are many types of Biriyani, each India state has its own and swear by it. Venba is preparing her mother’s favorite : Hyderabadi Biriyani.

Biriyani Gravy Recipe

  • Add the whole spices first : Bay leaves, Cardammon, Fennel seeds and Cloves.
  • Fry the Onions, Chillies, Ginger Garlic Paste and last the Tomatoes.
  • Add the powders : Biriyani Masala, Turmeric, Chilli powders and salt.
  • Finish with the Marinated beef and the water.

Layared Biriyani Recipe

  • Take some of the gravy in the bowl.
  • Layer the Biriyani : Gravy > Rice > Gravy > Rice > All the ingredients.
  • Cover with the lid and let it simmer keeping the heat low.

Birthday Feast

Flavor Text :Nothing for this one, it’s a series of six recipes, Venba really prepare a feast.

If someone has an idea of what are the six dishes, please comment bellow, I’ll edit the guide accordingly ♥ !

Chicken Rasam

Flavor Text :During the first part, Kavin mostly explain his difficulties when it comes to read tamil, however the second part speak about the particularities of Rasam, explaining that it’s essentially a watery soup heavy on black pepper.

As seen through the rest of the game, you can notice the mispronunciation of Indian as Kavin’s father came once at home ranting about “Mulligatawny”. In Tamil “Milagai Thanni” means respectively black pepper and water which are the main ingredients of this soup, “Mulligatawny” being a bad imitation of the original soup. At least Paavalan said so.

Tamarind Water Recipe

  • Put the tamarind paste and the water in the first bowl then mix the content of the bowl.
  • Place the sieve on the second bowl, pour the water of the first bowl in it.
  • Put the tamarind paste back in the first bowl and repeat the first two steps.

Rasam Recipe

  • Toast the seeds in the oil. Mustard seed & Cumin
  • Add chilies and curry leaves.

  • Add the tomatoes and the tamarind water.

Dosas

Flavor Text :While both Idli and Dosa batter is using the same ingredients, the proportions and thus consistency is different. You can add water to Idli batter to make a quick Dosa batter.

Kavin note that you can swap Rice flour with almond or coconut flour to make Dosa healthier, Venba answers that then it’s not Dosa anymore.

Kari is a word that means a lot of different things in Tamil, as a result it’s generally used for meat dishes.

Dosa Recipe

  • Add water to the plater then turn down the heat.
  • Put some batter on the plater and spread it.
  • Add some oil, crank up the heat and use the Dosa flipper to.. Flip the dosa twice.
