How to Use Investigator in Town of Salem 2

Getting a head start on playing Investigator effectively in Town of Salem 2.

Role Breakdown

The Investigator role in TOS2 is a Town Investigative (TI) role with significant differences from its ToS1 counterpart. Instead of providing investigation results, the Investigator now focuses on hunting killers. It is the Investigator’s duty to identify Coven and Neutral killers in the town by checking individuals for blood each night. If a player has killed, the Investigator will find blood on them. However, there are roles in the game that can deceive the Investigator. The Enchanter can make an innocent player appear suspicious, while the Illusionist can make a suspicious player appear innocent.

What To Avoid Early

Since the Investigator’s primary objective is to identify killing roles, it’s advisable to avoid claims that can be easily confirmed by other players, such as Tavern Keeper or Town Power. Even if these claims turn out to be fake, the probability of them being killers early in the game is low. Instead, be cautious of Tracker claims since the Wildling can easily and plausibly claim it. Also, keep in mind that the Wildling will have the Necronomicon second after all Coven members, significantly increasing their killing potential.

Strategy and Game Plan

While it’s sometimes best to keep your findings to yourself, as a Town Investigative role, it’s recommended to share your information with the town each morning. This is because Investigative roles cannot be targeted by the Ritualist or Doomsayer, and they are not a high priority for the Conjurers to attack during the day. Keep a close eye on votes and chat for players who are not actively helping the town and those with weaker claims such as Sheriff, Seer, or Psychic, especially in set role lists where the number of Town Investigative roles is limited. It’s also crucial to coordinate with other TI roles to ensure maximum coverage and avoid checking the same targets as your fellow Townies.

As the game progresses and Coven members start to die, focus on rechecking those with weaker wills or roles. One of the downsides of being an Investigator is that someone can be clean one night and bloody the next, so don’t hesitate to recheck suspicious players. In the late game, your primary focus should be tying up loose ends of anyone unconfirmed and deducing who is lying by analyzing factors such as the role list and graveyard. To keep track of potential Townies, it’s recommended to use notes in any game mode with a set list.
